The ECWCS system consists of seven levels, each with its own purpose — moisture management, heat retention, or protection from precipitation and wind.

🔹 Level 1 — Base Layer (Lightweight Undershirt & Drawers)

The first level is lightweight thermal underwear that wicks moisture away from the body and dries quickly.
This layer helps keep the skin dry even during intense movement.
Materials: polyester or blends with elastane.

🔹 Level 2 — Insulating Base Layer (Midweight Shirt & Drawers)

The second level provides additional warmth while remaining breathable.
It retains some body heat between the layers without creating a greenhouse effect.
It is ideal for cool autumn weather or as an additional layer in winter.

🔹 Level 3 — Fleece (Fleece Jacket)

The third level is a fleece jacket or sweater that retains warmth even when wet.
It is lightweight, breathable and does not restrict movement, making it ideal for everyday wear in cold weather.

🔹 Level 4 — Wind Protection (Wind Jacket)

The fourth level is a lightweight windproof jacket or softshell that can be worn over the base layers or fleece.
It protects against wind and light rain while providing ventilation during active movement.

🔹 Level 5 — Softshell System (Soft Shell Jacket & Pants)

The fifth level is a full softshell set that combines protection from wind and rain with mechanical durability.
It is used as the main outer layer in cold, dry weather or as an intermediate layer in severe frost.

🔹 Level 6 — Hardshell Suit (Hard Shell Jacket & Pants)

The sixth level is a waterproof and windproof membrane suit that helps keep you dry even in heavy rain or wet snow.
This layer is worn over all previous layers in case of precipitation or extreme weather conditions.

🔹 Level 7 — Insulated Suit (Extreme Cold Weather Parka & Pants)

The seventh level provides maximum insulation for extreme cold.
A parka and pants with high-quality insulation retain warmth even at temperatures as low as -30°C.
This layer is the final barrier against freezing temperatures and can be worn over the entire system.

  • Autumn (+5…+15°C): 1 + 3 + 4

  • Winter (0…–15°C): 1 + 2 + 3 + 5

  • Extreme cold (–20°C and below): 1 + 2 + 3 + 5 + 7

  • Rainy weather: 1 + 3 + 6
